AEQUITAS is pleased to announce its 3rd Workshop on Fairness and Bias in AI, scheduled for October 26, 2025, as part of the 28th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI 2025), taking place from October 25 to 30 in Bologna, Italy.
This edition builds upon previous successful sessions to continue fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, presenting cutting-edge research, and exploring emerging challenges in fairness and bias within AI systems. The workshop will address a broad spectrum of topics, including:
Bias and fairness by design
Fairness metrics and counterfactual reasoning
Impossibility results and multi-objective strategies
Federated learning, resource allocation, personalized interventions
Debiasing methods, human-in-the-loop approaches, and more
The workshop will feature two distinguished invited speakers:
Carles Sierra, Research Professor and Director at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). His talk, “On the engineering of Social Values“, will focus on the challenges of coding ethical values into autonomous agents and emphasize the essential role of human communities in shaping these social contracts.
Dennis Nguyen, Professor of Digital Literacy and Digital Methods at Utrecht University, will present on “Generative AI and Challenges of Unfairness – Balancing Technological Potentials, Public Values & Risks.” His discussion will explore how generative AI introduces new unfairness concerns, and how interdisciplinary strategies such as value-sensitive design and AI literacy can help navigate these issues
State-of-the-art research: Showcase and learn about the latest strategies to mitigate bias in AI.
Expert insights: Gain guidance from leading academics deeply engaged in ethical AI development.
Networking & collaboration: Engage with an international community of researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders.
This workshop will be hosted by an interdisciplinary team of leading experts:
– Payal Arora, Professor of Inclusive AI Cultures, Utrecht University, The Netherlands
– Roberta Calegari, Professor of AI, University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna), Italy
– Virginia Dignum, Chair of Responsible AI, Umeå University, Sweden
If you’d like to contribute, stay tuned for the Call for Papers (typically issued via AEQUITAS and ECAI platforms). Submission windows, topics, and guidelines are aligned with prior editions.
Don’t miss this opportunity to join a leading community dedicated to fair and inclusive AI design. The AEQUITAS 2025 Workshop promises to be a cornerstone event at ECAI 2025 for anyone passionate about building responsible AI systems.
